    Patient safety depends on doctors’ well-being. Medicine is a tough job, but it's made it far harder than it should be by neglecting the simple basics in caring for doctors’ well-being. The well-being of doctors is vital because there is abundant evidence that workplace stress in healthcare organisations affects quality of care for patients as well as doctors’ own health. In 2018 the General Medical Council asked Professor Michael West and Dame Denise Coia to carry out a UK-wide review into the factors which impact on the mental health and well-being of medical students and doctors. The detailed practical proposals in this report provide a road map to health service leaders faced with the challenge of developing healthy and sustainable workforces.

    The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in patient care currently is one of the most exciting and controversial topics. It is set to become one of the fastest growing industries, and politicians are putting their weight behind this, as much to improve patient care as to exploit new economic opportunities. In 2018, the then UK Prime Minister pledged that the UK would become one of the global leaders in the development of AI in healthcare and its widespread use in the NHS. The Secretary for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, is a self-professed patient registered with Babylon Health’s GP at Hand system, which offers an AI-driven symptom checker coupled with online general practice (GP) consultations replacing visits at regular GP clinics.

    @Emma Richardson has just started C4C in the smaller of our Trusts in Brighton. We started off at the smaller one, just in case we got bombarded with calls. We started in July. Emma can give you more information on how many calls we had. Its around 10 since we started. We also give out our leaflets to our follow up group. We have not been stuck with 'difficult' patients at all, they have all been great calls. Happy to discuss more if you have anything specific to ask Claire

    Hospital Watchdog is a nonprofit patient advocacy organisation in the US that champions safe hospital care for patients. They are a diverse group that includes nurses, physicians, pharmacists, healthcare experts, attorneys and members of the public. Some of them have experienced or witnessed medical errors that led to an extremely serious or tragic outcome. They are committed to improving unsafe conditions in hospitals. In February 2019, Hospital Watchdog conducted an in-depth interview with Ms. Dena Royal, a former paramedic, and respiratory therapist. Dena’s mother, Martha Wright, bled to death following a colonoscopy and a series of tragic nursing mistakes at Cass Regional Medical Center in Harrisonville Missouri.

    The Antibiotic Guardian campaign is led by Public Health England (PHE) in collaboration with the Devolved Administrations (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland); the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and professional bodies/ organisations towards the ‘One Health’ initiative. Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats facing us today. Without effective antibiotics many routine treatments will become increasingly dangerous. Setting broken bones, basic operations, even chemotherapy and animal health all rely on access to antibiotics that work. To slow resistance we need to cut the unnecessary use of antibiotics. The Antibiotic Guardian invite the public, students and educators, farmers, the veterinary and medical communities and professional organisations, to become Antibiotic Guardians.

    HindSight is a magazine produced by the Safety Improvement Sub-Group (SISG) of EUROCONTROL. It is produced for Air Traffic Controllers and is issued by the Agency twice a year. Its main function is to help operational air traffic controllers to share in the experiences of other controllers who have been involved in ATM-related safety occurrences.  The current Editor in Chief is Dr Steven Shorrock.

    When faced with a ‘human error’ problem, you may be tempted to ask 'Why didn’t these people watch out better?' Or, 'How can I get my people more engaged in safety?'
