    Many people will experience mental health problems in their lives. Around one in six adults in England have a common mental health disorder, and around half of mental health problems start by the age of 14.  This report from the National Audit Office focuses on the implementation of NHS commitments as set out in the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health, Stepping forward to 2020/21: The mental health workforce plan for England and the the NHS Long Term Plan. It examines whether the government has achieved value for money in its efforts to date to expand and improve NHS-funded mental health services by evaluating whether DHSC, NHSE and other national bodies: have a clear understanding of how much their work to date has reduced the gap between mental and physical health services met ambitions to increase access, capacity, workforce and funding for mental health services are well placed to overcome the risks and challenges, including the impact from COVID-19, to achieving future ambitions.

    Poor mental health is an important and increasingly prevalent issue facing farmers and the farming industry. This article in the journal Sociologia Ruralis seeks to understand the factors that influence the adaptability of support systems for farmers facing mental health issues, especially at a time of crisis. The authors undertook a literature review as well as conducting interviews with 22 mental health support providers and an online survey of people working within support systems and farmers themselves. The study found that support-giving organisations adapted during the pandemic using a range of interventions, but that implementation was affected by organisational and operational challenges such as limited digital training, funding shortfalls, staff trauma, lack of capacity, the rural digital divide, tension between providers and stigma. The authors discuss how landscapes of support for farming mental health can be made more sustainable to deal with future shocks.

    From early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, the Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA) and Centre for Mental Health were concerned about the increased mental health challenges that women during and after pregnancy were likely facing as a result of the pandemic and government-imposed restrictions introduced to tackle it. Thanks to Comic Relief ‘Covid Recovery’ funding, the MMHA commissioned the Centre to explore just how much of a challenge the pandemic has placed on perinatal mental health and the services that support women, their partners, and families during this time. This report draws together all of the available data collected during the pandemic for the first time.

    This study in the journal Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology aimed to determine the extent to which asymptomatic individuals infected with Covid-19 transmitted the disease to other patients and staff on a hospital ward. The authors found that a comprehensive symptoms and signs assessment, in combination with adequate follow-up, allows for a more precise determination of Covid-19 symptoms. The results of the study revealed that asymptomatic infection was quite uncommon amongst adults in this setting.

    The UK Covid-19 Inquiry is the independent public inquiry set up to examine the UK’s response to and impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and learn lessons for the future. In order to fully understand the impact of the pandemic on the UK population, the Inquiry is inviting the public to share their experiences of the pandemic by launching Every Story Matters. It will inform the Inquiry’s work by gathering pandemic experiences which can be brought together and represent the whole of the UK, including those seldom heard. The output of Every Story Matters will be a unique, comprehensive account of the UK population’s experiences of the pandemic, to be submitted to the Inquiry’s legal process as evidence. This toolkit contains information and creative assets that can be used to encourage participation in Every Story Matters. Every Story Matters aims to provide inclusive methods for people to talk about their experience of the pandemic, so anyone that wants to share their story feels heard, valued, and can contribute to the Inquiry.
