    Integrated care systems (ICSs) were created to increase collaboration in the health and social care sector and to enable the NHS, local authorities and other partners to take collective responsibility for improving health outcomes, reducing inequalities, delivering better value for money, and driving local social and economic development. This research from the King's Fund examines the development of ICSs by assessing their efforts to develop system-wide approaches to the recruitment, training and retention of staff. The findings are based on 24 in-depth interviews with local leaders in four case study sites plus a series of online workshops.

In this interview, PSMN founder Claire Cox reflects on why the network has grown to have over 1600 members and what it has achieved over the past three years.     The Independent Healthcare Providers Network (IHPN) have launched a toolkit to support independent healthcare providers to further improve multi-disciplinary team (MDT) working in the sector.  MDT working is an established practice in many areas of healthcare, including in the independent sector, and for patients with complex care needs such as cancer, MDTs are viewed as the gold standard for care.

    The latest report in Public Policy Project’s Medicines and Pharmacy programme calls for transformation across the pharmacy sector to unlock medicines optimisation which creates true system value. The report highlights that medicines optimisation has significant potential to contribute to delivering integrated care priorities, such as improving population health and reducing inequalities. As ICSs grapple with financial challenges, medicines, as the second highest cost to the NHS, represent a critical opportunity to improve patient outcomes and deliver better value for money.

    Two pathology networks are coming to the aid of a neighbour, still largely paralysed following an unprecedented cyber attack on its IT system earlier this month. HSJ has learned that Australian-owned firm Health Services Laboratories, which operates mainly from two NHS trusts in north London, will take on some of the primary care tests in south-east London while the Synnovis systems, which were taken out by the attack, are down. HSL will take on work from Lambeth and Southwark boroughs, while South West London Pathology, an NHS-run consortium based at St George’s Hospital, will take on similar work for GP practices in Bexley and Bromley. SWLP was able to connect electronically to send results back to 70 surgeries in south east London within three days. HSL confirmed it had been drafted in, but it gave no information on what tests it was performing or where, or how it was assuring itself that services in north London would not suffer as a result.     This June marks nine years of Sling The Mesh, the campaign group set up by Kath Sansom after she was harmed by pelvic mesh surgery. In this blog, Kath reflects on the valuable support the group has offered thousands of people harmed by surgical mesh. She highlights the successes the group has achieved by coming together to raise public awareness and advocate for better regulation and support for patients. She also outlines the many issues still faced by people harmed by mesh surgery and describes how Sling The Mesh will continue to press for better informed consent, greater transparency and an effective redress system for harmed patients.

Mark talks to us about his role as a National Patient Safety Partner (PSP). He explains the important role that PSPs play at national, regional and local levels of the healthcare system and identifies key opportunities and challenges they face in bringing the voice of patients and families at a strategic level. He also highlights the challenge of implementing the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) across a diverse range of providers and the complexities arising where PSIRF interfaces with systems and processes outside of the NHS.

    Project PIVOT is a new initiative led by Patients for Patient Safety US (PFPS US) that aims to advance the implementation of patient-centred patient-reported experiences (PREs) and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) to improve patient safety, diagnostic accuracy and equity in healthcare. Project PIVOT will provide an opportunity for diverse patients, communities of patients and patient organisations to collaborate with national and international experts and provide input via novel engagement methods to identify and prioritise PREs and PROs which are related to patient safety, diagnostic accuracy and equity–things that matter most to patients. Patients will also have opportunities to identify how and when they prefer to report their experiences and outcomes. Additionally, Project PIVOT will engage healthcare system leaders to identify and prioritise their PREs and PROs to explore possible synergies and integration with the PROs and PREs identified by patients. Project PIVOT is accepting applications from individuals interested in joining the project via the PFPS US website.

    Co-production is a method of engaging with communities, via partnership and power-sharing between professionals and communities to co-create solutions and decisions, with the intended long-term benefit of improving healthcare delivery and outcomes. This report from NHS Providers outlines the principles of co-production and actions trusts can take to apply engagement methodologies across their organisation. It provides an overview of different forms of engagement and summarises the potential benefits to trusts, including improved patient experiences and outcomes, and the delivery of more inclusive healthcare services that better meet the needs of local communities. It also makes the connection between engagement, co-production and the broader health inequalities agenda, unlocking the potential for collaboratively developing solutions to address complex barriers to health services experienced by some communities.

    Little Voices is a project run by Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust to amplify the voices of children who were patients at the Trust. Little Voices helped inform and support the Trust's ambition to deliver care in a setting that is child-friendly and equitable for all children. Getting input directly from children of a young age enhanced the Trust's understanding of what accessing care is really like for a child, seen through their eyes and not those of a parent or carer. Specific improvements are being implemented in the areas of hand hygiene, mealtimes that matter, play that is engaging and reducing fear and anxiety.

    Disordered eating can affect anyone, but it can be confusing to understand and recognise it in our own personal experiences. This guide, published by East London NHS Foundation Trust, is a snapshot of how adults in East London have navigated those experiences of uncertainty while seeking support for disordered eating. For many of the contributors, preconceptions about what an eating disorder is (or isn’t) have previously acted as a barrier to seeking or receiving support.     Healthcare services improvisation relies heavily on collaborating with patients and caregivers by acknowledging their feedback to enhance quality and safety. The 2023 World Patient Safety Day underscores the significance of co-production with patients in safety strategies. In accordance with this, a crucial tool that involves patients and caregivers is the “Patient-reported experience measures (PREMs)” that help in assessing healthcare delivery in terms of quality, safety and performance. These tools for various healthcare processes offer valuable insights into treatment effectiveness and areas needing improvement. PREMs are surveys used to assess patients' care experiences objectively, aiding in pinpointing the areas for improvement. Unlike patient satisfaction measures, which reflect only subjective evaluations, PREMs offer an objective view of care encounters. In view of the importance of a standardised tool for Indian health care organisations, CAHO in collaboration with various stakeholders and patients unveil the White paper on Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) tool development process. This white paper was released by the honourable governor of West Bengal, Dr C.V Ananda Bose at the recently concluded CAHOCON 2024 at Biswa Bangla, Kolkata.

    This systematic review in JAMA Network Open explored how much shared decision-making (SDM) is used in interventions aimed at improving cardiovascular risk management, and how it affects decisional outcomes, cardiovascular risk factors and health behaviours. The review looked at 57 randomised clinical trials that included 88,578 patients on SDM interventions for cardiovascular risk management and 1341 clinicians, SDM interventions were associated with a slight decrease in decisional conflict and an improvement in haemoglobin A1c levels.
